Once one of the biggest iron ore ships around, she met her fate in November of 1975 during a vicious late Fall storm on Lake Superior. 34 degree water temps, waves of 16-26' (with 3 of them near the 35' mark, nicknamed the 3 Sisters), blinding snow, winds gusting to 85 MPH, & even thunder occured the night she disappeared from sister ship Arthur M. Anderson's radar. Almost 35 years later, the controversy still continues as to what brought her down. These are the theories.....
-- she broke in half due to sheer weight when two of the 3 Sisters waves were underneath her bow & stern
-- she bottomed out on shoals along her route & slowly took on water
-- the 3 sisters waves capsized her in a weakened condition
None of the 29 crew members were ever found. Her remains lie in eerie stillness in 540' of water.
